The Kindling Prayer

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.”

– John 15:5-7

Without passion, our relationship with God can become ritualistic. Sometimes, we settle for religion, rather than remembering that this is a love affair.

Pentecost and the season of Summer is an opportunity to renew our vows with God. Pentecost kicks us into this season of intimacy and abiding by first reminding us of Godā€™s desire to give His people His heart at Mount Sinai.

As a local community of faith, every summer, we seek the Spiritā€™s fresh infilling to remind ourselves of our need for union with God and one another.

One of the primary ways we renew our vows is through prayer.

Prayer helps us to fan the flame of our love for God.

As Pastor Bryan taught us on Pentecost Sunday, one of the main resources we’ll be using this season is the Kindling Prayer. The Kindling Prayer is a resource adapted (and used with permission) from practices by Companions of the Cross and it helps us by creating a framework and providing a vocabulary to pray.

Examples of Kindling Prayers:

Jesus, You are my Bread of Life. You fill me, you satisfy me, I am sustained by you. Glory to you, King of the Universe. I know you reign, there is nothing that can or will move you from your seat of power and glory. You are capable and strong. I rest in your strength and wisdom my King, the King of the Universe. I love you, you are the Bridegroom of your Church! I know you will take care of us during this time. My heart finds comfort in the fact that you are our bridegroom and that you are coming for us!  Lord, you are, Tender-hearted, true to your word, and holy. May I be tender-hearted today like you my Lord. May I be a man of my words. May I be holy in heart, mind, and body. Like you Lord, like you. Lord, I pray for my daughter Isabella. Sheā€™s turning 13. Sheā€™s growing. Touch her heart, Lord. Anoint her with your Spirit. Father, awaken her spirit, To know you deeply, intimately. I pray with confidence because you are my portion and my cup. I know you will satisfy. You are my treasure, all my fountains are in you. You are my provider, I know you will meet our desires. I know you, Lord, I know you, you are Father. Thatā€™s why I praise you, thatā€™s why I adore you, thatā€™s why I desire you. I love you, Lord, I love you. You have called me by name and I am Yours, and we are yours. My family, my tribe, my childrenā€¦ each and every one of themā€¦ are yours. You are the light that shines in the darknessā€¦ so Lord, shine your bright light during these confusing, hard, lonely times for our tribe. All creation worships You. Blessed be Your Name. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Amen.

Jesus, You are my living water. The source of my peace. You bring refreshment to my soul. In You, I find myself planted by streams of water. Glory to You, our Healer. Your hands hold restoration for those who are crushed, brokenhearted, sick, and alone. You are close, You are healing. Blessed are You, King of the Universe, I know that You see it all. And You care. I find comfort in Your sovereignty. Lord, You are steadfast, good, and true to Your word. May I be steadfast in times that feel wobbly. Good, when all seems hopeless. True to my word despite feeling or emotion. I magnify You, for You are our hiding place. Our strength and defender.
You are the light in the darkness, guiding us to You. You put a new song in our hearts when words feel stale and lifeless.
Bless the Lord, O my soul. Come Holy Spirit, fill us up. Amen.

Jesus you are the Resurrection and the Life. You came to redeem all creation. You are coming again to do it again. Completely. Wholly. You are True to Your Word. You are trustworthy. Your words never fail. When you speak, it is done. You are the Word made flesh. Thank you for EKKO. Would you be our rock and anchor. May anxiety and fear subside in your presence. Help us to live in the reality of the Kingdom that is here. Would you be our portion and cup. Fill us with your spirit and may we gladly take the cup to be The Church you have called us to be for such a time as this. I praise You. I long for You. I trust in You. Come upon me Holy Spirit. You have conquered sin and death! There is nothing to fear whatever may come my way. You have conquered our worst fears. May I live not in what I see but in what you said.  Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty… Alleluia to the Lamb Who sits upon the Throne. Come Holy Spirit, fill us up. Amen.
